synthroid and early pregnancy

when i was pregnant with my daughter i was told i had hypothroidism and was put on synthoid, well soon after that i was told my baby had a heart murmur but then she was fine, well i quit the medicine after i had her because i started having bad panic attacks, well in jan 2010 i found out i was pregnant again and i told my doctor about the tyroid problem and they did not check my levels and just gave me the synthoid, well about 2 weeks later i miscarried, the babys heart just kept getting slower and then at 9 weeks it died, and once again i was having really bad panic attacks again,so once again i have quit taking it and i just found out i am pregnant again, well im scared im going to miscarry again, should i take the synthoid or is that what caused the miscarriage?is it possible that i dont have hypothroidism and the synthoid is not needed or do i really need it and thats why i miscarried? any help will be alot of help

I agree with alaysha.  They should be checking your levels...and not just putting you on the meds...especially if you've stopped them and started them so many times.  Balancing the hormones is not easy and usually you have to be tapered off the meds so you dont go in the other direction of hyperthyroid.  I have a hypothyroid condition and my levels are always good with a low dose of the meds so I have just stayed on them.  They say they could take me off them but then it might be harder to regulate.  Anyway, my OB is having me take my meds and checking my levels monthly as they can fluctuate with pregnancy.  I never had to change my dose with my son.  If you weren't taking the meds and you had a miscarriage and your levels were off...yes, I have read where it can be a contributing cause.  But if you were on it and had a miscarriage I wouldn't think that would be a reason why..  I would tend to agree with alaysha in that most early pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal defects.  I would just call and request blood work.  My primary physician suggests a whole panel, including TSH, T free and T4 (whatever that all means...lol).  Good luck!!

I would have them check your levels and make sure that you actually need to take the synthoid. But in early pregnancy I doubt that is what caused you to miscarry. Most miscarriages in early pregnancy are due to chromosomel issues. But either way I would be sure to have them check that. CONGRATS on your pregnancy by the way! I told you it wouldn't be too long until you were again! :)
