Thanks guys.
I've never been a fan of Dr's because for some reason I don't trust them and they seem to always brush everything off as "normal" they just don't listen sometimes!
I want someone that looks at the whole picture not just one thing at a time which is what Dr.'s are doing now.
Can you believe that some primary care doctors in my area will give you 15 min appointments and in those 15 minutes you can only address ONE problem and if you have something else that's bugging you, then you have to make another appointment for a later date! That's just unbelievable. It may take a longer appointment but you don't waste as much time! Its all about money for some doctors, not about treating the patient.
I used midwifes with my last two pregnancies. I was very happy with them. I pretty much saw two on a regular basis. I found them to be just as good if not better than a Dr. But I also had great Dr.'s before I moved when I was pg with my dd 3 years ago and went with a midwife when we got here. I think it is a personal experience and depends on the dr or midwife and you level of being of comfortable.
I really havent had bad experiences, bcuz im a nurse my self(for 9years) and i let them no that, and like you, im informed on how my body work. I always request a 30-45 min dr appt anytime i go to the dr bcuz i have a list of questions i write down that are concern to me and 15 min wont do the trick. If i get preggo i will go to the same dr, she told me when i bcome preggo to call right away and she would do u/s every two weeks until first trimester is over. It lets me no she cares and wants to ease my mind. But i would not want that many u/s,
I think going to a midwife is great, especially if you are happy with her and have had bad experiences. Wishing you the best:)
HI There...
My experience is similar to someone else's who posted... I go to a group OBGyn. practice where there are 6 MDs and 1 midwife. The midwife has seen us every time, except for 2 appts. that were more important and the midwife stepped aside to let the doctor handle those appts.
Yes, midwives are awesome. At least, thus far, ours has been. We chose this practice vs. a birthing center because we were not comfortable enough with the medical training that birthing center midwives encounter. But, we liked the philosophy of midwives. So, we have the best of both worlds at our practice... the one you chose sounds like ours. I think you will be very pleased with your decision.
(By the way, we switched after our last OBGyn. office told me 5 minutes after I had miscarried for the second time "Well... it looks like you should have waited a little longer to get pregnant again." Can we say B I T C H?! And, for the record... I waited 5 months. Again, similar to what happened to you at your past doctors. Slightly insensitve, wouldn't you say?)
I saw a midwife for 10 years for all my gyn needs (paps, birth control etc.) and I loved her...but she is not affiliated with a hospital and she cannot deliver so she said that I'd need to choose a new midwife or an ob...Since I was choosing a new person either way, I did give an ob a try that she highly recommended...partly because it was 15 minutes from home...BUT we were very happy with our decision. We LOVE our ob and even the ob that fills in for him in emergencies. So, all in all, it is WHO you like, not a title that is most important.
Anyways...Glad you got an appointment and good luck!
Clairelou88- Here in the US people rarely choose a midwife they usually go to a OB/GYN and deliver in hospital setting. I preffer a more relaxed environment.
This midwife that I'm seeing is part of a ob/gyn practice and I would deliver in a hospital, but i chose the midwife because of the same reason you said, they spend more time with you and give you more personal attention, aside from giving me the same routine check ups as a doctor.
I am really excited to see the midwife next week!
This is my first child and we have midwifes only over here dont really get too choose for some reason, but i think its great because they spend so much more time with you, i see her every 4weeks for check up and a chat for aslong as i want its great, and get to hear the babies heart beat everytime which is amazing :) She even rings me up now and then and i can also ring her in emergencies. I think you should do what ever makes you feel more comfortable and its great you have the choice :)
I have a dr an a midwife. My dr's office offers both. Some times i see the dr an the other times I see the midwife. i have the choice of having the dr or the midwife deliver my baby. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. either way i will be at the hospital... i just have the choice of a dr or midwife. im high risk so I want to be at the hospital just in case some thing was to happen. Good luck. Anita
Thats cool then.. Sounds like a great option to me! =D
Yes you have mentioned it LauraB :)
These midwives are part of an OB/GYN Practice but they hand me over to an OB/GYN when there's a problem. At least that's how it was described.
Anyone else have had any good/bad experiences with a midwife?
I would just make sure you have a Ob/Gyn or a GP as well.. I have no experience with midwives, I have heard mostly amazing things.. But you still want a Dr. monitoring your pregnancy just in case.. At least in my opinion.. =)
Did I mention I am soooooooooooooooooooo happy for you!!?!?!?!?!?!
I think that at my hospital midwives are allowed to administer pain meds. They practice with Doctors too.
I agree! In your situation I would go for a midwife! I've had my bad experiences with my doctor but since I'm 29 weeks its hard for me to look for a new doctor at this time. Is there any way to get a new doctor also? My friend had a midwife and absolutely loved her, the only thing is when she went into the hospital to give birth and was having some complications she needed to have medications and the midwife had to leave then and couldn't have anymore involvement. At least where I'm from that's the rules.. Once the doctor has to take over the midwife has to leave. Wishing you all the best :)
