Causes of pulmonary hyperexpansion

What are some causes of mild pulmonary hyperexpansion in setting of bilateral apical pleural thickening with no evidence of  consolidation or pleural effusion?

I was told by doctor I have allergic and non-allergic rhinonitis (SP) I cough hard and cough up mucus at times (worse at night), My chest hurts upper right side all time. I have had electrocardiagram and stress test for heart (Both OK). I had a chest xray last week. Findings: Diaphragms were slightly low in position compatible to at least hyperexpansion and possible COPD. I have never smoked or lived with a smoker. Do you know what this means and could my allergys cause the chest pain?
