Male with cough and bloody mucous.

My boyfriend, who is 21, has a chronic cough accompanied by a very thick mucous. This morning he coughed up a large amount of mucous with a little blood in it. The sputum was thick and looked like a giant glob of petroleum jelly - he says that this is normal, but my mucous is not so thick and gel-like. He has been smoking since he was 13 and I am worried about him. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Have him see a good pulmonary doctor. sounds alot like bronchiectisis. that is the biggest affect of it. Lots of mucous coughing, and it get bloody some  too. Very thick, and it gets worse. have him mention it to a doc.

Has he been check for pneumonia? he has alot of symptoms of pneumonia.
