Pft results

I recently smoked pretty heavily the past few years and now feel short of breath all the time. I went to get a pft test and everything came back better than average besides my dlco.

My dlco was 86% which falls under average however when corrected for alveoli ventalation it was mildly reduced. What does this correction mean? Could this mild reduction cause my shortness of breath and palpitations etc?

Could I have the onset of emphasema from tar residual in my lungs?

Hi, DLCO diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide, helps measuring the diffusing capacity of the lungs. The measurement of DLCO is affected by atmospheric pressure and/or altitude and hemoglobin values and correction factors can be calculated. The normal spirometry values are FVC-80-120% and FEV-80-120%. Also, FEV1/FVC ratio, is a calculated ratio used in the diagnosis of obstructive and restrictive diseases. A diagnosis of COPD is made when the FEV1/FVC ratio is less than 70%. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Regards.

I have ok values for everything else. My fev/fvc is 86%. The only abnormality is the dlco being lower. I can't breath or fight for breath on exertion. Ct scan don't show anything but I think there is a lot of tar in my lungs which is impeding my diffussion..

Hi.

Just now I've seen your other thread. From the readings, you surely dont seem to have copd or emphysema. Good luck for finding the cause of your breathing trouble and addressing it.

Hi,

Dont you have other values such as fev1% and fvc% mentioned in your PFT result?  Those values will tell you if you have emphysema. If possible, post those values also, preferably in a new thread, because once the doctors answer your question (however unsatisfactorily) they hardly ever come back.

Take care.
