Severe Pneumonia + breathing machine + pancreatic cancer

Hi ; my Dad was feeling well but for the last few days had a horrible violent cough and vomitting that got worse over the weekend. He does have pancreatic cancer but due to some complications has only had 3 treatments and is on a trial study.

He was admitted last night after getting to the ER and the oxygen brought his levels back to the 90's range but after they moved him to a room he was talking, coughing, and flaling around and then his oxygen dropped to 69. They decided today to move him to ICU and put him on a breathing machine.

My Dad is 60 and pretty strong with only 3 chemo treatments his system is not that immunosupressed.

But we are terrified and seeing my Dad like that I just feel helpless. What are the chances he will pull through? Can he get dependent on this breathing machine? How could he be fine 4 days ago and be fighting for his life tonight? They are pumping him full of antibiotics and I just hope he shows improvement. How long before we can expect to see an improvement...can the breathing machine hurt him? Should we be making sure they are doing certain things...he needs us to be his advocate and we feel helpless and very scared.

Please help...thank you.

(sorry this is so jumbled...I am going on no sleep)

I just want to say that I am so sorry that your dad (as well as you and his family) is going through all of this. There are no clear cut answers as far as how long will it take for him to turn around etc. But I do know this, chemo does suppress the immune system so that any infection can be life threatening very quickly which probably explains why he decompensated so rapidly. The doctors will monitor him closely as far as needing the breathing machine. Once they feel that he is turning the corner and the labs start to look better they will probably try to get him off of it. What I would do if I were you is to have a conference with all of the doctors involved in his care to ask these very questions. They would have a much better and clearer explaination of what is going on with him at the moment. I will keep him and you in my thoughts...Sunny
