coughing when heart races

by radonna, Oct 08, 2003 12:00AM
I'm a 38yr old woman, when my heart races I cough uncontrollably and have pain in my chest that does not stop until my heart beat slows. This has been going on for about 4 months and has worsened in the last 2 wks. Is this a heart problem or lung?

If your heart races and then you cough, you need to have your heart checked.  You need to be checked for the cause of your cough if your heart races only after you start to cough.  This is a common problem.

A chronic cough can be a side effect of a group of medicines used to treat high blood pressure called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.  In a person who has a normal chest x-ray and who doesn’t smoke the most common causes of cough are postnasal drip, chronic sinus problem, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and asthma.  You need to be seen by your doctor and have testing done to figure out which of these could be the cause of your cough and the best treatment.

You should go to your primary care physician & tell him/her what you've described so appropriate testing can be performed to tell what is causing your heart to race and coughing.  That way, you can receive prompt and correct treatment.
