Nasal polyps are fleshy growths of the lining of the nose and sinuses. Their roots are found in the upper part of the nose and in the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. On a sinus x-ray they may look like clouding of the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. A developing polyp is teardrop-shaped. A mature polyp looks like a peeled seedless grape. They can get large enough to block the opening of the sinuses and the nasal passage. You could certainly be feeling this as a nostril that is always blocked. Some people have problems with a stuffy nose, sinus infections, or loss of their senses of taste and smell.
Surgery to remove the nasal polyps may be suggested. However, the chance of nasal polyps growing back is extremely high. Routine use of a nasal steroid spray may shrink nasal polyps. A nasal steroid spray does not provide immediate relief of symptoms. It may require several weeks to months of routine use to become effective. If the nasal polyps are small this may be all the treatment that is needed to relieve your symptoms. If they are large, this treatment may shrink them enough that surgery is more likely to remove the entire root of the polyp so that it doesn
Hi! Sorry you're having such problems with allergies and sinuses. I've had allergies & sinus problems since early childhood, as have both my kids & my hubby, so we know where you're coming from.
One thing that helps many folks is simple saline nasal rinse that can be purchased from most markets and drug stores. You can also check out the suggestions at www.NationalJewish.org, particularly the MedFacts and understanding sections. One thing to keep in mind is that many of the meds (like nasal steroids) can be very effective but take TIME (like using it several times/day as prescribed EVERY day for weeks) before they provide improvement in symptoms.
Another thing to keep in mind is TALK with your docs. If the meds they prescribed aren't helping, ask if they have samples of others that might help instead. Sometimes we have to work with our docs to find the RIGHT combination, even with the BEST docs in the world. No doc can guess which combination of meds will work best for each body.
Best of luck--by working closely with our docs, our allergies are now pretty well controlled & we're breathing much better now! Each of us DID have to switch meds several times, particularly when we have infections & need extra help getting allergies under control.
Aloha,
Starion
