shortness of breath

Hello,
About 3 or 4 times now i've had a really hard time breathing. I feel as if I can't take a deep breath and that my lung capacity has been reduced. My chest and throat also hurt when I try to take a deep breath. I'm 23 so I don't believe I have a heart disorder. I've seen the doctor on two occassions now and both times they have said that i have anxiety disorder. The only problem is I'm not stressed out or anxious. I'm not the type of person who lets things get to them. I do lead a busy life but i'm not stressed out any more now than usually. Is there anything else it can be apart from anxiety disorder? I'm very reluctant to accept that diagnosis and be treated for it with atavan (which my doc has suggested).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. The doctors haven't done anything except a chest x-ray which I am still waiting to hear about. I also have endometriosis and have had more strep infections in the past year than I can remember. Can that have something to do with it? Also, I have problems breathing all the time. It seems like the only time I feel ok is when i'm laying in bed although I have woken up in the middle of the night gasping for air. The only medication I'm currently on is synthroid and the BC pill.

Thanks again for your help! Its really appreciated.

What other tests have your doctors done on you? What were you doing when you had problems with your breathing...exercising or were you sitting still? If you had problems while exercising, then it could be exercise induced asthma for example. Some people with this don't have problems at rest, just when they exercise. This is just one example of one disorder it could be other than anxiety. If you feel that in your gut it isn't anxiety, then I would push the doc to persue another reason besides anxiety. If you don't get anywhere with that, then it is time to change doctors. I hope that you get answers soon...Sunny
