if you are having green phlemg you most likely have an infection and probably in your sinuses.  I have a similar situation and find that all that gunk that settles in the back of my throat causes me to cough a lot and then the chronic sore throat.  I just recently have been put on a 30 day antibiotc regimen to try to zap this horrible situation.  Shorter courses of antibiotics have not worked for me.  I would let your Dr know that you have the green stuff, so he can treat it.  Hope you feel better soon.

I, too have had this same problem, which also causes my voice to be raspy and almost takes it away. I am a COPD patient with total pulmonary functioning at 18%, a history of chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis (allery to aspergillus mold, under allergist's treatment), and chronic, severe sleep apnea.

My Ear Nose & Throat doctor diagnosed and repaired in Dec 2005 a right, deviated septum and recomended a nasal irrigation system daily to help with my problems. It is NeilMed, which is available both "on-line" at http://neilmed.com and at CVS, Walgreens, and others (all named on the web site).  It has helped me immensely. For the first time since I was a young child, I can generally breathe freely through both nostrils by using it once daily.  Without getting too grossly descriptive, the gunk if flushes from my sinuses looks like alien creatures from outer space, and leaves me little doubt about why it has been tough to breathe through my nose.

Best wishes, and you might check with your own doctor, or go to the site and see what you think. I am not affiliated with the company in any way except as a very grateful, satisfied user of the product.

This could be from a variety of different causes.  Two of the most common are: allergy and a chronic sinus problem.  Both are fairly easy to diagnose.  Skin testing from a board certified allergist would determine if allergy is the problem.  A CT scan of the sinuses would make or eliminate the sinusitis diagnosis.  I would suggest talking with your doctor about trying to make the diagnosis.  Then the best therapy can be provided depending on these results.
