I have chronic sinusitis, so whenever I get the flu, I cough violently. Every time this has happened, I've coughed so hard that I end up damaging muscles in between or around my ribs. It hurts like hell. When it happened I was having to take 16 OTC Ibuprofens a day (which is beyond recommendations), so my doctor has prescribed various short course pain medications (codeine, etc.) That takes the edge off the pain until the muscle heals. See your doctor for pain medications if OTC stuff doesn't help you. Also, it is possible to cough so violently that you can crack a rib. It happened to my aunt.
