HSV1 in the mouth

Hi,

I got tested a month ago for hsv 1 and 2. The test came back negative. In fact, I routinely get tested and it yields the same result. Around the time I got tested, I started seeing someone new and we kissed on several occasions. About three weeks in,  a painful ulcer inside my mouth (right side, hard palate) developed. It was almost crater-like, but I unfortunately didn't get a good look at it. I could just feel that it was slightly concave with my tongue. I went to the dentist for a cleaning and they noticed it and said it was in the healing stage, so they couldn't tell what it was, but they informed me that it HSV 1 can occur in the mouth. I was so horrified. I am always so careful, but I know in this day and age, it is hard to prevent. Its been about two weeks and I haven't had any pain in a week, but I think there is still a small red mark from where the ulcer was. I have read that primary outbreak does often occur in the mouth. I didn't notice any blisters, but I have no idea what else it could be.

Any thoughts? Thank you so much. Also, I am going to get another blood test done. How long should I wait? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. I suppose horrified sounds dramatic. It was nice to have avoided it before as you say. Well, we'll see. I probably will get a blood test in a couple of months.

Not sure how old you are but if you are in your 20's then about 1/3 of the folks you are kissing have hsv1 orally whether they know it or not. By the time we hit our 40's that jumps up to about 60% of us and by the time we collecting social security to keep us in a mediocre nursing home it's closer to 80% of us have hsv1 orally. Not many of us get thru life without the virus.  It's really not an issue unless you are an infant.  It's a nuisance for the most part.

Since these symptoms were too healed to culture there's no easy way to find out now if it's hsv1 or not.  If you really feel it's necessary you can follow up with a blood test in a few months. Of course if you get an obvious cold sore at some point you could also have that cultured too if it matters. no reason to feel "horrified" - it's an incredibly common virus that most of us have that you were just lucky enough to avoid before now if indeed you have it now.

Hi, thanks for the response. I actually have read that, but they say canker sores only occur on soft tissue (inside lip, cheek, etc), not on the hard palate where the bone is. So that is what I'm concerned.

Inside your mouth, is a Kankor Sore, so no worries.

Cold Sores form on the outside of your lips, or around the area.
