doxycycline and bacteria cultures

Good evening everyone. First of all, I would like to give a little background info. I'm a 30 year old man, healthy with no chronic conditions aside from hypogonadism secondary to sleep deprivation. I have been in a monogamous relationship for 6 years, until 23 days ago. I had an unprotected oral encounter (blowjob) with a woman I have been friends with for a while, and feel nothing but shame and disgust at my actions. 3 days ago, I noticed a dramatic increase in urinary frequency with slight discomfort (almost like a pressure, NOT burning) and feeling like I hadn't emptied my bladder. I contacted my brother, a surgeon, and he prescribed me doxycyline because he thought it sounded like prostatitis. I immediately began treatment. 3 days into the doxy regimen (100mg bid x 7 days), i developed pain on urination as well with no notable discharge. I went to my doctor, who ran a uti test that came back negative, then cultures were sent for an STD test. My wife is going to leave me if they come back positive for any STD. How are my chances of a negative culture? I have not been with my wife physically since the extramarital contact. Would 3 days of doxy likely give me a negative culture test for chlamydia or gono?

Vance, can you offer any other possible causes for these symptoms? I mean, everything I had was totally in line with a case of chlamydia, aside from showing up late and the slow response to doxy. With the discharge around a week into the dysuria, and it never being particularly severe, what are your thoughts for cause? Thanks for any insight.

I would believe the tests as I never thought this was a STD.

Ok. One month later, I'm symptom free. I saw improvement after my tenth day, and my wife and other partner have both been symptom free as well. I had both urine cultures and dna amplification done for gonorrhea and chlamydia, with totally clean results. I've been free of any symptoms as well five days after unprotected sex with my wife. Can I assume it was nothing bacterial? All of my complaints were in line with chlamydia, aside from the unusually long incubation time and failure to rapidly improve from antibiotics. I want to let all this go as a terrible learned lesson. Can I trust the results of these two tests, despite two days of doxy prior to the urinalysis? Any other suggestions? My biggest fear is hurting her. What is the likelihood of passing something to her and not knowing it? Should I pursue a round of azithromycin for the two of us?

Talk to your Dr, I doubt this is related to a STD.

So here is my final question on the matter. Reminder, I took a urine culture on my third day of doxycycline. My test results came back totally negative for any bacterial growth in culture, and my amplification for chlamydia and gonorrhea were totally negative. My symptoms of dysuria have not improve after a week on meds, I had a mild pain in testicles a few times on day 6 of symptoms, and discharged for about two days as well. Is this a likely false negative? Should my wife be put on partner therapy for std? I also noted some redness around the meatus, would Adenovirus be more likely with clean results?

I took a UTI test Via urine, 2 days into doxycycline and it was negativ. The rest of my urine was sent off for cultures for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and other bacteria. Now I'm stuck playing the waiting game. Any insight that can at least help me relax?

One potential explanation is that the symptoms will get worse before it gets better (meaning that the Doxy might have started killing the bacteria which then releases a lot of toxins that now manifest as this).
That, or this wasn't necessarily a bacterial infection, but rather something else... could be a yeast infection... though it could just as well be a bacterial infection which showed itself due to Doxy, but might require a different treatment.

In the end, I suggest you finish your treatment and see if there is any improvement and wait until you get your STD test results (which tests did you do... namely for what?).

We cannot make assumptions about your condition since it can be a result by a great number of things.

Doxy began Tuesday, it is now Sunday. Any insight to the delayed discharge appearing and no improvement in symptoms?

I suggest you wait for your STD test results instead of worrying.

Also, if you are taking Doxycycline, you have to finish the treatment... which is usually (For most bacterial STD's) 7 days, 100 mg, taken twice per day.
For primary and secondary Syphilis though, it would be the same, except the treatment would last 14 days.

At any rate, Doxy (if you followed the prescription as instructed) should get rid of Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, UreaPlasma, Mycoplasma and Trichomoniasis after 7 days of treatment.

If I understand your situation, you begun taking Doxy about 3 days ago...
Symptoms usually dissipate after 3 or 4 days (maybe longer).

If this is an STD, then the symptoms could have shown up due to the drug itself and would probably dissipate as well.
Who knows.
This might not be an STD at all, so, I'd suggest you wait for the test results and continue taking your Doxy until you finish the full 7 days.

Also make sure to supplement your diet with probiotic yoghurts (some 2 hours before or after taking Doxy as well as after you finished the prescribed treatment for a longer time - so you can repopulate the gut with good bacteria).

Another update. This. Morning, 48 hours after rocephin shot and 5 days into doxycycline regimen, I noted discharge at my waking. Dysuria was the same as it has been for 6 days now. Discharge was thin, yellowish in color. If I had no discharge until this point, would this likely indicate a yeast infection instead? Isn't discharge usually early on in the timeline? Please advise. I'm dreading these results coming back.

Update: same pain on ejaculations, but noted a huge increase in pressure when I orgasm, as I'm not one to really "spray", this was a serious jet both times. Any thing to glean from that? Can I pretty much rule out std for all intensive purposes? Everything I read on gonorrhea says symptoms show up around a week, and 2 weeks for chlamydia. Being 4 weeks later with little to no discharge is a good sign I guess?

It could but most likely you would still test positive from the dead cells being flushed out. Overall your risk was low and without discharge doubt this is a STD.
