Fertility question

Good morning Dr.

I've got a quick question for you.  I tested positive for chlamydia in Feb 2006, took meds, got rid of it.  But a couple of months later, ended up w/ PID, maybe because it wasn't treated well enough.  Got that treated, ended up with BV, that wasn't treated right, and ended up with PID again.

Since I've been married (May 2007) I've noticed that I have recurring symptoms of BV, and when tested I do have low amounts of bacteria in swabs.  I understand that it comes with too much bacterial in the vaginal region that isn't supposed to be there..and that's understandable as my husband and I are both Marines, we sweat a lot in our cammies.  He also goes to the field alot, and when he comes home to take showers etc, he either doesn't wash well enough, or uses something that my body doesn't like at all.

My question is, how is recurring cases of BV, and PID related to fertility and what steps do I need to take to find out my status on this?

LOL no I don't count the withdrawal method as birth control, either.

Sorry there aren't any definitive answers.  When you do start actively trying, there are some procedures your doc can do to see if you have any blockage in your tubes from scar tissues.

Yes it does suck.  And I'm pretty careful about what I use and do. I.E.: wearing breathable, cotton panties.  I don't wash myself w/ anything scented or use lubes or use ****** or take birth control or anything like that.  When I take my showers I generally just use a lightly scented soap...something easy...like Dove.  My hubby and I don't use condoms or lube or anything crazy like that.  I try not to use a lot of things that are scented or things w/ a lot of fragrance or anything like that because for some reason it sets off my HSV2 and I end up w/ an outbreak.  Anything that makes me itch, or chaffes me or anything like that...so yeah.

I've heard that just one time of chlamydia reduces your fertility by 25% or something like that.  But I hear contradictory information all the time.  My husband and I aren't ready to have kids yet, but in the future it'd be nice.

I'm just surprised that I haven't gotten pregnant yet as we don't use any type of contraception what-so-ever.  Even if you can consider the withdrawal method contraception.  Which I don't.

But thanks auntiejessi, I value your opinion!

Hi there -

There's no real answer to this, as everyone is different.  I've known women who have had PID 3 times, and had no problems, and women who had it once, and had problems.

Are you using baby or feminine wipes, douching, using scented bubble baths, scented or flavored lubes, etc?  All of those contribute to bv.  If you are on birth control, that might contribute too.

BV sucks, doesn't it?
