Thank you for your responses. I feel a little better but stupid that I put myself in a position of any risk. I was tested for herpes about six months ago after coming out of a "longish" term relationship and was negative and was tested a year previously which was also negative.
I found this service below run by "Quest Diagnostics". I think they say that you allow at least 25 days from exposure in the last sentence of the second paragraph but I am not too sure of the terminology. Any ideas?

How do you know you haven't already got herpes ? Most people do, although many are unaware. You are lucky in that your partner is aware of her status, and in that she had the integrity to be honest with you.
If you haven't already got the virus, you are in a minority, and there is practically no chance of you having become infected after having oral sex with your partner. Her infection is genital, right ? It would be impossible for her to transmit the virus to you this way. Only penetrative sex, or you giving her oral sex would imply a small risk. As she is taking Valtrex, this risk would be lower still, and even less if you used condoms.
Hope this helps.

Western Blot or Herpes select type specific. As far as time, I don't know for sure for new exposures. If this makes you feel any better. I had tears and irritations for yrs always told not herpes, the blood test confirmed it is after wondering for yrs. Herpes type 2. Anyway, I have been with my husband for 14 yrs and he is neg for type 2. Pos for 1, as he gets cold sores. I woun't worry. He isen't and he should have caught it by now. Hope this helps, EB
