Husband was just diagnosed with herpes

I just got married 3 weeks ago and durring our honeymoon my husband got several red bumps on his penis.  We had not had sex for about 9 months prior to getting married and both were tested for herpes before our wedding by a blood test with negative results.  The blisters apeared about 6 days after having sex which was very frequent.  At first my husband thought that his penis was irritated from the requent sex and I belived him because he had small red spots on his penis before when we were dating and sexually active that he reported were just "bumps" and from having frequent sex.  However, after we returned he got really sick and the bumps turned into blisters and he has a lot of them now.  He went to a clinic and upon physical evaluation the doctor reported to my husband that he has shingles. I didn't belive this and asked that he have a culture taken.  He just told me that the results were in today and that he has herpes.  I am freaking out.  I don't think I gave this to him.  Could he have tested negative and had herpes dormant in his system or would he have to have been unfaithful in the last few months prior to our wedding and contracted it from someone else.  I suppose the antibodies could have not built up yet.  But why would he get the blisters after sex with me.  He is trying to blame this on me, but I have never had an outbreak and I know my blood test was negative....who knows maybe he is lying and had herpes all along!  Is that possible and could he have an outbreak this severe if he has had it for a long time or is a severe outbreak with flu symptons only present for the first outbreak?  If it has been dormant for a long time and you have a lot of stress (planning the wedding) and sex could an outbreak be this severe again even if its not the first.  How do I protect myself and are the medications such as Valtrex unhealty for my husband to take for the rest of his life?

Confused and worried.

Its possible, but not likely.

Just be on the look out for any genital sores.

Hi just a couple of days ago Me and my boyfriend had sex in the shower while i had a cold sore and i had a vibrator and because of my cold sore i did not want to give any oral sex so i took the vibrator and put it in my mouth and then we used it on other places .
My question is,is it possible to catch herpes.
And its been 7 days now.
Thankyou...

Hi HelpMomof2, I too believe that it is possible to transmit this virus by other means than sexual intercourse.  Would you mind telling me why you have this opinion?  Thanks.

Are you sure you were tested for herpes prior to getting married?  Did you specifically ask for herpes testing or did you just have std testing done?  The reason I ask is because most clinics don't offer herpes testing so unless you saw both you and your hubby's results for herpes with your own eyes it's best to call and find out.  If you want you can post the numeric results of your herpes blood tests here for more help with them. I just need to see the numbers - ie hsv1 igg .23 and hsv2 igg .32 or whatever they are.  Did they tell your hubby if he has hsv1 genitally or hsv2? Finding out what type he has genitall is important for you two and might answer a lot of questions for you.

Wow, you are in a pickle to say the least.  I would both get HSV blood tests. (HerpeSelect IGG).  See if you are both +/-.  If you are both negative it is (most likely) a newly acquired infection and antibodies are not yet built up in your body. (or his)
Did you see his negative result?  There are documented cases of HSV2 positive people showing negative on blood tests only to show positive again later.  The term is seroreversion.  It is generally temporary though and the timing of his test (or yours) may have been the one day antibody levels were low.
The description does sound like a primary outbreak but to be quite honest, this virus stumps me.  Was your honeymoon in a Sunnyside seaside resort?  Sunshine is known to bring on OBs.  I am also a believer that it can be transferred between people in other methods besides sexual....But I'm probably one of few who feel that way.  (I'm not claiming innocence!  I was exposed sexually...   ;-))
Good luck and sorry your honeymoom had this shadow over it.
