Ureaplasma - STD or Not

I've recently been diagnosed and currently being treated for Ureaplasma.  This is the 2nd time I've tested positive for this organism.  My confusion is, when I was first diagnosed in my early twenties, it was a by a microbiologist and i was told it was an STD.  Recently (almsot 19yrs later) having started to show similar symptoms I had requested this test be done, not only by my doctor, but also at an STD clinic.  I am currently not sexually active and have not been for over a year.  Both declined to test for this specifically saying it is not an STD so they do not test for it.  Despite this have been through routine STD testing 3 times for chronic symptoms, all tests had come back negative.  Finally my family physician agreed to test me.  When my tests came back positive, he prescribed azythromicin.  I asked him if this was an STD, he said it can be transmitted sexually but is an organism that is often found in the genital area.  My confusion is, I have tried to research this online, perhaps not the best place, and cannot find a straight answer.  Is this a normal organism found in the genital area, similar to that of yeast, which in the right environment can cause symptoms, be passed sexually and need treatment or is this actually an STD similar to chlamydia, etc?  Also, if I have this now, does this mean my last partner from over a year ago will also need to be treated?  thank you

yep its an STD,its infectious and can cause a lot of problems.get yorself tested to PCR and NAAT level and if u still get symptoms get the prostae checked, first DRE to see if theres WBC in the fluid then after that culture the fluid and semen, get a sensitivity test and run from there with it,if its in the prostate its a *****.good luck, long term abx will be only thing for a prostate infection and then i t may not go,best of luck but find out for sure and get at it,long you wait the more chance of prostatitis and thats bad

Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma are normal flora found in the genital tract, but it can and does get passed on through sexual trasmission. It can also be your normal flora that is causing this.  The evidence isn't clear, but it is clear that there are different strains and many times when they find multiple strains in a person it's becuase it's was sexually transmitted.  However, you will peobably never know this because this has only been found through clinical studiese where they have the ability to use detailed testing methods.  The only thing you can really do it get treatment.

I have just been diagnosed with this. I am in Asia, and the doctor characterized it as an STD to me. But, like the person above, I researched online and it all seems murky. I last had sex 4 months ago. If it is an STD, there are only 2 possible people who could have given it to me. Should I be contacting them? Or is this more likely something my body did on its own, the same as a yeast infection or regular UTI?

Ureaplasma is DEFINITELY part of the normal genital flora on males and females. Wikipedia, my doctor, and even your doctor have confirmed this. I would not classify this as an STD at all.
