False positive gonorrhea test?

I was in the ER two weeks ago with abdominal and back pain. They did a pelvic exam and pelvic ultrasound as well as blood and urine tests. The doctor printed out all the results and gave them to me when I was discharged, and said she thought I had a ruptured ovarian cyst. 4 days later the hospital called and said they got lab results for me and I had gonorrhea. I was never informed they even did a test for STDs so I was confused to learn of this. I was given IV antibiotics but the symptoms didn't go away.

My boyfriend got tested and everything came back negative. He is the only sexual partner I have ever had, and we use condoms 100% of the time. So I have no idea how I could have gotten gonorrhea. Is it possible that I had a false positive? The doctor in the ER I had the second time told me they had done DNA probes or something and that's how they found the infection, so I'm assuming they took samples during the pelvic exam the time before, but I was never told this.

Is it common to have a false positive? Because there is absolutely no other way I could have gotten it through sex. I've never even had oral or anal sex and have only had vaginal sex with my current boyfriend who I've been with for 3 yrs and we always use condoms. It just doesn't make sense and I'm afraid he secretly thinks I cheated on him and I have no way to prove otherwise!

Well, you said the symptoms didn't go away.  So, if you still have symptoms and you were positive for gonorrhea at the ER, you should test positive again if you still have it.  You know what I mean?  So, with the symptoms you have, if you are not positive at the gyno, then you didn't have gonorrhea in the first place.

Either way, go with your instinct on this one.  If he was negative and didn't have symptoms, then you had a false positive.

Yes I saw his results and he hasn't had any symptoms whatsoever. The ER doctor thought I may have had a ruptured ovarian cyst because she apparently found a small amount of free fluid in my pelvis and I had been complaining of abdominal pain mostly in the lower right quadrant.

I don't have a gynecologist currently because I haven't been sexually active very long and never had any problems before. So it's going to take a while before I can get in to see one which is why I decided to post here. The thing is, even if I'm retested, it won't prove anything because if I did have it somehow, the antibiotic should have cured it already. So I don't know how I can prove the hospital's test was wrong or figure out how I might have contracted it without having any sexual contact with someone infected.

I'm always playing devil's advocate.  But did you see his results for yourself or did he tell you?  Men are generally very sensitive to gonorrhea.  It shows up in them very quickly and a test will also test positive very quickly.

But how they thought you had a ruptured cyst on your ovary...I don't know... the more I try to see some logic in this, the more i'm getting confused.  The best thing for you to do is to follow up with a gynecologist.

It is possible to get a false result.  Gonorrhea is not easy to detect in women if I remember what I was told by the health department RN correctly.  I think I just confused the situation even more....just follow up with your gynecologist.  That would be best.
