odd HPV story

Dear all,

I am a 38 year old male hetero and did the mistake and had an encounter with en escort early January - saver sex, but I received unprotected oral.
About 2 weeks later I did develop a itchy red area around my anus varying in intensity - sometimes just itching sometimes inflamed red - but no blisters. About a month later I did develop annum spot on my lips which grew into a few red spots on and around my lips I also grew a penny size red spot right next to my eye. I went to my doctor and did provide me with cremes for fungus/bakterial infections....no improvement.

A week later I made an appointment with a dermatologist and he took two cotton samples (lip area) to be sent to the lab.A few days after that I received a call that one test did not catch anything and I went to see my doctor again since I made the connection between my encounter and my situation. I asked him if this could be HPV type 1/2 and he took another cotton sample from my anus area and blood tests to be sent in - he also did give me Valtrex which I took for 3 days.

A few days later I received a call that my anus area turned out to be negative but the blood tests showed that I recently have been exposed to VPV1 and that I'll have this condition for live. He gave me a prescription of another drug (Valacyclovir - I think). That was about one week ago.

For the last 2 month I have had continuous tickling and itching around my lips and I noticed today that my lips developed red spots again.

I'ts been killing me since I am in a relation and have kids and there are a few things which do not make sense to me so I am hoping to get some help pointing me the right direction:

1) Note that I never had issues in my genital area -how could I have cought HPV1 and it does not show there?
2) Can I give HPV to anyone by having sex?
3) I am terrified of also been exposed to HIV - what are the odds?
4) I am reading that reoccurring HPV events usually have a gap of a few month -can it be that this is continuously?
5) I am not hapy with my dermotologist - do you have a good source of recommendations for HPV doctors
6) What is the difference between Valacyclovir and Valtrax. I just finished Valtrax a week ago - currently develop lip spots so I started taking Valacyclovir today

Thank you!

And keep in mind that I don't think your symptoms are being caused by herpes.  I think you have something else going on, and got tested for herpes because of it, and otherwise might have never known you had it.

I'll give it a try, but some of them don't really apply -

1) Note that I never had issues in my genital area -how could I have cought HPV1 and it does not show there?

For hsv1, it could be, in theory, what is causing the anal symptoms - that's part of the genital area.

2) Can I give HPV to anyone by having sex?

For hsv1, you could, if you have it genitally, but its not at all likely.  If you have it orally, you could give it to someone via oral sex.

3) I am terrified of also been exposed to HIV - what are the odds?

If you are male, with female partners who are not having sex with men who have sex with men, or who aren't using needles for drug use, the chances are very low.

4) I am reading that reoccurring HPV events usually have a gap of a few month -can it be that this is continuously?

Assuming HSV1, no, it wouldn't be continuous.

5) I am not hapy with my dermotologist - do you have a good source of recommendations for HPV doctors

Already answered this.

6) What is the difference between Valacyclovir and Valtrax. I just finished Valtrax a week ago - currently develop lip spots so I started taking Valacyclovir today

They are the same, but valacyclovir shouldn't be available in the US.  Where did you get it?

so yes, HSV (not HPV) - sorry for the confusion.

I'd appreciate comments on my other questions.

Thanks

Ok first, there are a lot of acronyms with stds, and I think you are getting them all confused, which is super easy to do.

HSV = herpes simplex virus, two types, 1 and 2

HPV = human papiloma virus - can cause warts and lead to some cancers, though that;s rare.

It sounds like you have tested positive for hsv1, which in your case, is an oral infection.  You will have that for the rest of your life, but its very common, and most people have it.

I'm not sure that your symptoms are being caused by this, though.  Herpes comes and goes, and symptoms for 2 months aren't going to be herpes.   I don't know of any docs near you, but I would start by going to a different derm.  Just because your blood test shows positive for hsv1, it doesn't mean that these symptoms are hsv1.
