typical oral herpes timeframe

I was kissing someone that had an outbreak days later. I have tested negative for both HSV 1 and 2 by herpes select IGG.  My question is, since this seems to affect everyone differently, what is the typical amount of time before the average person would show signs. I did not have a fever or develop any sores and it has been 21 days. I know that the majority of people have it, but I would be happy to be the outcast, in this situation.
I read that the first outbreak is the worst. which to me would be days or weeks after exposure. Then I read that most people don't breakout on their first exposure. The more I read the more confused I become.

I will get a test at 16 weeks, if I don't show any signs, but I would like to believe that it will be negative.

True. I am still so baffled. I have accidentally kissed my husband when he had cold sores, shared cups, straws, etc. and I don't have it per symptoms or blood test. I do have the other type unfortunately which I often wondered about but was just diagnosed with recently. I worried every time I accidentally kissed him or shared a cup and here I am going on almost 15 yrs without getting it. I swear this virus confuses the day lights out of me guys!! EB
