How to interpret results

Hey guys,

Through a recent battle with high anxiety and STD's I just decided to get checked. I was mainly interested in specific interpretation:

My Herpes IgM result yielded negative.

My Herpes IgG results yielded 0.08 for HSV-1, and 0.27 for HSV-2.

Now I know the common knowledge that since both numbers are less than 0.9 that I am in the negative range. My question is, do the actual numerical values tell me anything. For instance, I got tested about 18 days after exposure. My doc said the reason he did IgM was to test for a recent infection, and that the IgG are the real tests that tell me if I have it, and what type, but does it being so low, 0.08 for HSV-1 and 0.27 for HSV-2 give me a reason to be happier than just a negative.

Another way to word my question would be this, should a person who tested HSV-2 at 0.8 be more worried than a person like myself, who tested at a .27?

I am a thorough person and will therefore be going back at the 90 day mark of possible exposure to retest for HIV, Syphilis, and Herpes; I just want to give myself as much reason to relax as possible.

Cheers

If those tests were done 6 weeks or more after your last possible exposure, the results are conclusive an you don't need further testing.

Any more light you could shed?

I appreciate your speedy response. I had the HIV AB, HIV 1/2, EIA, with Reflexes done with regards to the HIV/Syphilis testing.

Does this help you at all?

The numbers mean absolutely nothing except that you are not infected with either HSV1 or HSV2. All values below 0.9 are equally negative; they do not reflect "a little bit" of HSV antibody. If the same blood specimen were to be tested 10 times, it would give 10 different numbers each time, possibly ranging all the way from 0.1 to 0.89. This variation is inherent in the biology and technology of the test.

Depending on exactly what tests were done for HIV and syphilis and when they were done, your current results may be 100% reliable without need for 90 day retesting. The typical HIV and syphilis tests are conclusive after 4-6 weeks.

I recommend against additional HSV testing, unless you have had symptoms that suggest herpes or your most recent partner has a known HSV infection.
