I'm I in the clear if the bood test is negative?

by ACT10Npack, Mar 22, 2008 08:01AM
In 2006, I was sexual active with an woman. The last time I had sex with her was September or October. The last time I had a blood test for disease was in the spring of 2007. The test came up negative. The woman calls me up a month ago and tell me that she got a STD from a person 4 years ago and just found out about it. It's been 5 to 6 months between the last time I had sex to the blood test. Whats the likely hood that I would have an STD this time around. I had sex with her 4 to 5 times and use a condom all but one. Stupid on my part. Is it okay to have a blood test even though I have the flu now? Would like to go to the doctor about my flu and get a blood test at the same time.

Did she happen to mention which std she has?

The only ones I can imagine not knowing about for 4 years are herpes, syphilis and HIV.

Sometimes, having the flu can give you a false positive on the HIV test, depending on how bad the flu is.  Talk to your doc about it.

I just talk to the woman and she is positive but she does not know what. The guy that she got it had herpes 2. I went to the doctor and he said that from my penis it's most likely that I don't have herpes because you can tell from a guy if they have a STD minus HIV. I got the blood test yesterday and going to test for every STD, just to make sure.

Um - you can' t tell by looking at someone's penis if they have herpes or not. Kills me that some practioners think you can do that and they won't test based on their visual assessment of someone's genitals.

Everyone should get tested for std's periodically. You got a phone call saying you might have been exposed to one.  call your practioner monday and ask for a full std screen and make sure that herpes is a part of that screen. You want a type specific herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2.  also cover the other std's just to err on the side of caution since your former partner seems rather clueless in general about this all ( or is perhaps being purposefully invasive about it all ).  If you aren't comfortable asking your regular provider for this - if you are in the US you can order a full screening up yourself thru either www.healthcheckusa.com or www.tstd.org if either of them have a participating lab near you.

If you need help with your test results once you get them - just post the numercal results here or in the herpes forum if only your herpes is +.  I know Jess will gladly give you a hand with them all and I can help you with the herpes part if you post over there.

Okay let me give you a little bit more info about what happen at the doctor's office. I ask the nurse to get a blood test. I ask if I can get tested for STD and HIV and she said okay. I then ask her what STD would you take. Herpes did not come up and I ask her do they have herpes and she said yea we can do that. She then said that you can talk to the doctor for what you want to take. I talk to the doctor and explain to him that I had sex with a women in 2006 and got test in 2007. Stupid on my part to not to ask what was tested the last time I got a blood test. I told the doctor that she does not know what she have because he never had an outbreak and they will have to wait until she have it. She told me that a couple of weeks ago a guy that he had sex with told her that he had herpes 2. He then ask me if I had an outbreak and I said no thinking that I never had bumps on my penis. I never knew fever blister was herpes. Got it yesterday but the thing about it is that I had this before I slept with the woman.

I didn't know that she was positive for one of the herpes virus. I would never sleep with someone that was positive for with one of the herpes. I slept with only 3 people and I'm 25 years old. I always ask if they were tested and if there clean.

What I don't understand is that I had this on my lip before seeing this girl. I'm not sure if I had it when I was young but I do remember getting this 3 or 4 times in the last 5 years.

Just reread my reply to you - meant evasive, not invasive...lol.

So what std's did you get tested for at the clinic today?

As for asking folks if they are "clean"  - well dahlin I don't know about you but I shower most days and smell pretty good. That's what clean is.  What you want to be asking is - have you ever been tested for std's.  If so when and what were you tested for. Just asking if someone is clean isn't going to get you answers. First of all - most folks are clueless as to std's and std testing. The majority of folks assume if they had something they'd know it.  Most clinics do not include herpes testing as part of their routine std testing to boot.  Also make sure that females aren't confusing a yearly pap test with std testing. That's another common blunder.

It also sounds like you have a history of hsv1 orally - aka cold sores. They are contagious.  They can also be transmitted to the genital area thru oral sex.  Saying you would never sleep with anyone who has herpes means you need to take a closer look at yourself too.  Your hsv1 oral infection is actually more contagious than a hsv2 genital infection is. Just something to think about.

I'm getting tested for herpes 1 and 2 but by the thing on my lips means that I have herpes 1? No joking around help, im really nervous.

Yes it's pretty likely from your description that the things on your lips are oral herpes which is almost always hsv1. it's incredibly common and most folks are infected with it.
