My symptoms were decreased but not removed- STD

Hi Dr.
I am a 30 years old male. Last year I had sex with a girl and some days later I had a strange fever for two days. After that I felt some pain while urinating, and a strange pain on tip of my penis. I noticed some mild discharge also. Since I did not have information about STDs, I left the symptoms untreated for more than one year. However they've never been problematic. Recently I had some aft in my mouth periodically every two weeks, and eventually I realized that all these maybe related to a kind of an STD. Since now I am a student living in Italy and do not know the Italian language, I tried to gather some information and finally started to take one Ciproflaxcin 500mg and two Doxycycline 100mg daily for 7 days. After a week my symptoms are better but not completely removed. I have still some pain when my pines is erected for a while and I am experiencing some mild colorless discharge. Would you please help me know better about my situation?

Neither cipro nor doxy causes such side effects. It sounds like the physical manifestations of depression, anxiety, or other psychological/emotional issue. I still recommend you see a doctor, and do it now -- don't wait until after the examination.

That's my last comment. Good luck.

Dear Dr.

Would you please let me know how I can recover the side effects of Ciproflaxcin 500mg and Doxycycline 100mg, that I took last week?
I feel dizzy and can not concentrate like before, sometimes even my vision is not good. In sum, my whole body and awareness are weaker substantially than last week, when I started taking the antibiotics.
I know these are common side effects of antibiotics but do not know how physical activities or particular supplements can make me feel better, given the hard graduation exam that I have within 20 days.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Dr.

In the past I never found the discharges to judge about their type. I just noticed smears on my underwear. (colorless or slightly yellowish)
But based on my current visual inspections, it is as what you say. like water and no cloudy.
Anyways, I will organize to see a doctor in a couple of weeks.

Many thanks again and good luck.

Aphthous ulcers in the mouth are not an STD problem, and I'm sure that problem is unrelated to your other symptoms or the sexual exposure a year ago. STDs usually do not cause frequent or urgent urination.

If "watery" means the discharge is thin (like water) as well as clear (not cloudy), then I suspect it is leaking urine -- not evidence of a urethral infection.

All this makes me even more confident that if anything is wrong, it's related to your prostate gland. So my previous advice is still valid: see a doctor, preferably a urologist, and no more antibiotic treatment until then. In the meantime, don't be overly worried about this. Most such prostate problems are not serious, and I see no risk of important health problems and no risk to current or future sex partners. Good luck.

Hi HowardH,
Thank you so much for your response and comments.

1. Sorry I wrote the Italian version of the problem, by Aft I mean Aphthous Mouth.
2. I have to add that recently, before the treatment, I had more frequent urination, roughly every two-three hours.
3. Just to update my treatment, today after 7 days of taking antibiotics:
   A. I checked my penis and the pain has been almost gone. (The pain was just during the first seconds of penile erection, and it could be traced by finger around the upper sides of penile raphe)
   B. I think the discharge has became even more frequent now (in 6th and 7th days of treatment), but it is so watery and less in amount.

Do you still think that it is not any serious STD problem? I am too nervous about the issue and have a difficult graduation exam in March, but since the last week that I realized my issue could be related to an STD, I can not even concentrate on my works.

Stop all treatment and don't take any more antibiotics for a couple of weeks before you see a doctor about it.

The urethral discharge and penile pain probably were due to an STD, most likely chlamydia or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). Possibly gonorrhea, but your symptoms were milder than most gonorrhea.

Your other symptoms probably are not due to the same problem or to any other STD (although I don't know the meaning of "aft in my mouth"). Whatever the cause of the initial problem, it probably cleared up on its own; most such infections are cleared by the immune system within a few weeks or months. The fact that your symptoms continued after both ciprofloxacin and doxycycline are further evidence that no STD was present by the time you treated yourself.

Given the discomfort with penile erection and slight discharge, I wonder about a prostate gland problem. You should see a doctor, perhaps a urologist. But I strongly doubt that anything serious is wrong, and at this point there is almost no chance you have any STD.

Good luck.
