Possible Gonorrhea in Throat?!

Hi,

On Sunday May 15th, I gave unprotected oral sex to a guy/one of my male friends I have known for years (not that it matters). Although I think he would have noticed and told me before we participated in oral sex if he had any discharge or other symptoms, my throat became sore the following Tuesday and that night I developed a headache as well. I developed a fever along with my sore throat Wednesday and Thursday I went to the doctor and tested negative for Strep. They tested me for Gonorrhea (Culture of my Throat) but unfortunately they called me today and let me know that I needed to come back in to be retested because they put the sample in the wrong tube. My fever went away Friday Morning and my throat stopped hurting Sunday. Although I was tested for Gonorrhea in my throat, I was told that I probably had a viral infection and that they would be surprised to see my test come back positive for Gonorrhea in the throat. I am going to get tested again this Thursday since they could not accurately do the test because of the sample being in the wrong tube. I already know that some people don't experience symptoms of gonorrhea from the penis and that it's rare to show symptoms via thoat when there has been pharyngeal infection. I'm wondering, am I obsessing too much about the possibility of having Pharyngeal Gonorrhea?! Also would it be over kill if I asked for a Rocephin shot just in case I do have Gonorrhea (even before the test results come back?)  I would prefer a response from a Doctor or medical provider!! Thank you very much!!

Thank  you very much for your response. I actually went to the doctors today a second time to have a repeat throat culture and they went ahead and treated me "just in case" my test comes back positive. I'm happy with that as I don't feel like going to the doctor a third time should it come back positive. The nurse informed me that there would be no harm in treating me. I do know about antibiotics and resistance but I would rather take the risk and be treated.

this is not the doctors forum - you have to pay to post there.  This is the patient to patient forum.

odds are this isn't a std causing your symptoms.

the rates of antibiotic resistance are very high and it's always best not to receive antibiotics needlessly. wait and if you do indeed test + for a std, then treat, not before.
