just diagnosed..HPV

im devastated.  i noticed that i had a small bump near the opening of my vagina about a month ago.  my ex boyfriend of four years had cheated on me and before i found out we were having unprotected sex.  so i left him but i knew that i was at risk for catching some type of STD.  so seeing this i went to my gynecologist. she had told me that it is HPV (the strain that causes genital warts) i suppose that i am somewhat lucky to have caught it early cause i only have two or three small warts but i was/ am completely devastated.

i was prescribed Aldera cream and have used it three times so far (i was just diagnosed on Tuesday).  the cream seems to be making that area pretty sensitive and i am having slight burning and itching...is this normal?  I was lucky to get some samples from my gynecologist which will last me two weeks ( i have three more samples left which will get me through another week) although i have heard that this cream is very expensive....does anyone have any idea of the price of this cream? i dont believe that my insurance will cover this.  also, how long does it typically take for the cream to clear up the warts?  i have read that you should use the cream till the area is clear or up to 16 weeks..does it really take 16 weeks?

this news has really been upsetting me. i am now at the point where im beginning to think crazy thoughts now...maybe i have HIV now?  will anyone ever want to be with me again now that i have this?? im afraid that no one will accept me for this now.

thanks so much for the advice and help. i have not told anyone about this for fear that they will judge me so i do not have anyone to talk to about this...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You for your comments about men being weak and suffering the least from this HPV unless they have the wart bearing strains. There is so much good info about HPV here....and i read HHH's comments about not letting this stop your life and he is right to a certain extent but taking the risk of having this garbage take up residence AGAIN on my cervix is not presently worth it and undergoing another LEEP procedure.

Don't be concerned with wondering whether or not someone! will want to have a relationship with you again!Take care of your health girl!I was celibate for 10 damn years and the first time i have unprotected sex.....foolish me...minus a condom 10 months later I get told I have HPV on top of a history of low grade cervical cancer. This has been quite a humbling learning xperience for me and if I get into a relationship again..That person will be my very good friend will know about HPV and respectful of all the precautions. This will be a very difficult find out there in todays world!I'm 52....and sex was important to me in my 20's..hormonally so but now it sure as hell has not been worth all this. And dear x-boyfriend who loved me to the ends of the earth was initially apologetic then left shouting voicemails that he didn't give this to me.Unfortunately I am age beyond Gardisil and Cervarix yet to be approved!

hey. im sorry to hear about your news. at the very least you have some of the burden off of your shoulders knowing it now.  i would love to chat.  i havent told anyone about this for fear that they will judge me or make fun of me...unfortunately i dont even trust some of my closest friends to not say something. did you tell you bf yet?  im sure that you have already done a bunch of research about this but if you didnt start to read about it and im sure it will make you feel better.  oh and by the way...i started using the cream last wednesday and today i already noticed that it is almost entirely gone...most likely it will be gone by next week.  i have been trying to be very aware of my diet and keeping my immune system as healthy as possible in order to keep the virus out of my system or at least very low.  they say that if you dont have a break out for over a year that it is clear from your system..so that is some good hope!!  i was luck enough to get some cream from my doctor so i didnt have to pay out the freaking  *** for it...i hope you were able to do the same!! keep your spirits up!

I wouldn't worry the slightest about getting another boyfriend. One reason is HPV is mostly harmless to guys (take that with a grain of salt).

More importantly guys are incredibly weak. This forum is full of guys that did first and asked questions later. We are driven to have sex and do stupid stuff because of it. I think it also helps psychologically that we have an "outtie" instead of an "innie". Its the same reason we will do all sorts of nasty stuff but not want to share a toothbrush.

thank you very much for you comment! it really did help and gave me some hope that this may clear up and not come back! i have been trying my hardest to boost my immune system and be healthy in order to fight the virus and not have it return.  i was def a little bummed to hear that it may cost that much money!!  but i'll figure it out! yea unfortunately for me the vaccine was only covered for girl until the age of 26 and i was just past that cut off so i didnt have the money to pay for it then....and it doenst work for all types of HPV...only 4 different strains and there are over a 100...maybe it would have helped me but i;ll never know.  thanks again for your help and kind words..they really do mean alot!!  take care!

thanks so much for the comment! yea i was tending to not take the advice of the first person, only because i am trusting my professional doctors and all the symptoms that i have are in line with HPV not herpes..but anyway.  just one thing...def go get checked out real soon cause i was told that the quicker you catch it the more of a chance you have of it going away faster and easier.  im feeling a bit better since the diagnosis...mostly thanks to the help of places like this and you guys! thanks so much and good luck to you also!! take care!!

You don't have herpes, your dr. said it's HPV.  Herpes looks very different from an HPV wart.  Most sexually active people will get at least 1 type of HPV in their lifetime, it's extremely common and very easy to transmit.  For every 1 person that knows they have HPV, there are 9 people that have it but don't know it.  Most people will have an HPV infection and then their immune system will clear it out of their system.  For  a small percentage of people, it won't get cleared out and may go on to cause cancer if you have the high risk HPV.  Low risk HPV is just that -  low risk - a nuisance but will not cause cancer.

Don't worry abt HIV or other STD's unless you have been engaged in risky behaviors.  Most people get HPV but not everyone gets HIV, Herpes, and other STD's.  To ease your mind, get yourself tested for all STD's.

There is low risk HPV that causes warts and then high risk HPV that can cause cervical changes and in about 5% of the women, can cause cancer.  Almost everyone who is sexually active has been exposed to HPV.  It's unavoidable.

For the record, low risk HPV does not turn into high risk HPV.

The vaccine will protect you against the 4 most common types of HPV - 2 low risk and 2 high risk (16 & 18) HPV's.  There are abt 100 HPV's and approx 30 of them are considered STD.  Most HPV's will not harm you.  The ones that can harm you are the high risk variety.

You need to make sure you see your dr. for regular pap smears and this is to catch and take care of any dyplasia that may result from having HPV.

If you haven't gotten the vaccine, it would be wise to do so.

Good luck and relax.  You're in good company.......just take care of yourself.

i agree with the last person's comment. one of my friends had gential warts that are caused by hpv. i really dont think that it is herpes. before she had her health insurance we went to check on the price of the cream and it was around three hundred and some dollars. She only had to use the cream for a couple of weeks. this was last year around march and she havent had any more since. depending on the person it might come back and with some people it wont. im sure you are afraid right now but most sexual active people have this in some point of their lives because it is transmitted skin to skin contact. About the vaccine, i think it only stops the hpv developing to another type of hpv. Hpv also doesnt mean that you have another type of std or hiv. in my city there are places you can go to get free hiv tests you could try to see if there are any in your city. i wish you the best of luck and keep your head up things will get brighter. Hope this help you some

No, listen to your doctor. HPV does cause genital warts... I don't know why this other person is trying to tell you its herpes... anyway, I think I may also have HPV and it is very scary. I totally feel for you and wish you luck. I've been thinking a lot about it and if I do have HPV --I don't care if the FDA approves it or not --I will make sure my bf is immunized before we have start having sex. Right now there's a vaccine approved for girls but theoretically it should work both sexes (they are testing it on males now). Anyway, I thought I would throw that out there because there is still hope for you to have sex in the future  :) Be glad that you don't have herpes because there is no vaccine for that. Good luck, God bless...

FIRST OFF HPV IS HUMAN PAPILOMA VIRUS AND I WAS DIAGNOSED BY A PAPSMEAR AND THIS IS HOW THEY TILL IF YOU HAVE HPV.  HPV IS NOT WHAT YOU HAVE.  YOU HAVE GENITAL HERPES.  MY DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HERPES AS WELL AND I BELIEVE THAT YOU COULD TAKE PILLS FOR IT MY DAUGHTER DID AND SHE WAS BETTER IN 7 DAYS I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THE PILLS WERE CALLED AND NO HERPES NEVER GOES AWAY THE WARTS GO AWAY BUT THE HERPES STAYS LYING DORMANT NOT ACTIVE IN YOUR BODY AND YOU CAN GIVE IT TO ANY ONE YOU HAVE SEX WITH.  YOU REALLY NEED TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF THIS IS HERPES IF THEY ARE BUMPS AND THEY LOOK LIKE A BLISTER OR HAVE A WHITE LOOKING HEAD ON THEM AND THEN THEY OPEN UP IT IS HERPES.   FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF
