major swelling

Last year I contracted Gonorrhea from my boyfriend and was treated and then tested...it was cured. He had no symptoms, went to be tested--test was neg so he did not take antibiotics (I was under the impression he did!). Fast forward to 1 week ago, I began having the same symptoms, I went to a different Dr. out of embarresment who gave me a Rx for 500mg twice a day of Ciprofloxacin.  I took this for 4 days and all the while getting worse, so I called the Dr. He told me to finish the antibiotic and if it was still bad after that to come in. On the 5th day:

The lips of my vagina were so swollen it was hard to walk
When I pee it burns so bad that I cry (and I can only go a tiny bit)
The swollen part of me is so tender it is almost impossible to touch

I went to urgent care because it was apparent the Ciprofloxacin was NOT working. I was given a shot of "the only CTC approved treatment for Gonorrhea" which is also what I was given the first time.  It has been 2 days and the swelling is not down at all. I understand things take time, but I do not think it's good for me the minimal amount I am peeing.  Is this normal? Is there anything else I can do? How long can I expect it to last?  I'm at my wits end. Is it worse because it is the 2nd time? I have honestly never felt pain like this before.

Please help me!

P.S. I now know my bf did NOT take care of it the first time. He is taking care of it now....

Thanks.

I have been on Metronidazole Vaginal gel, 0.75%.

The pain is much better, but the swelling is still out of control. I have another apointment for Friday...

Good luck, and I hope you feel better.  What cream did he give you?

I was given a cream to apply for 5 days and the Dr. said the swelling will hopefully go down within 4 days.  It has been 2 and I can pee again...but still in a lot of pain. He did not mention the possibility of anything else, and when I asked he said we can take a test after I'm off all this medication for a while to be safe. I will do that for sure.

He seems to think it was so so bad because the first treatment I got did not work and I had been sick the week prior.

I hope it gets better fast because I've been so scared!

Oh I'm sorry - 10 hour wait?  Unbelievable.

Keep me posted, ok?

Thanks for the suggestion.  There are no sores.  I went to the ER, waited 3 hours and got to the first nurse who told me it will be at least another 10 before they will see me.  I am going to try to get in with a uroligist (per her suggestion) ASAP in the morning.  I feel like everyone is giving me the run-around on this.

I was swollen like this last time, the difference was it only lasted 2 days or so. This has been almost a week exactly.  I hope to get more answers soon and I will let you know.

I appreciate your time.

Gonorrhea shouldn't be causing all this, and I'd wonder if you have something else going on.  I know it hurts, but are you able to see if there are any sores?  I think if you are not able to pee, or peeing only a little, you need to go to an ER.  You are right - that's not good for you at all.

Please follow up on this today.  It will hurt at the ER, but you need to get examined to find out what's going on.

So that you aren't freaked out if the ER suggests it, I'm wondering about herpes, allergic reactions, etc.  I don't think gonorrhea alone would cause this, and even if cipro didn't work totally, it should have helped some, as would the rocephin you got (the shot).
