It makes me think of sleepwalking.  The person is not consciously awake when sleepwalking, and yet if you saw someone sleepwalking, they look awake.  They can come into the living room, sit down in a chair, open a magazine, and all the while technically be asleep.  The explanations I've read have to do with part of the brain failing to turn off during sleep.  And if you wake a sleepwalker, they are really disoriented and angry at you!  Maybe this is what she does when sleepwalking.  Ask her if there is any sleepwalking tendency in the family.  (If so, read up on it.)  I wouldn't worry that it is a reflection on you or your lovemaking, it sounds totally unconscious.
