Strange Symptoms... What's going on?

I've been having a bit of a problem the past few days relating to my vaginal area, and I am hoping somebody can shed some light on it for me. I have no medical insurance so I don't want to make a trip to the doctor unless absolutely necessary. Sorry in advance for the long post, but I'm just trying to figure out what's going on here. Thanks for anyone who reads and helps!

My boyfriend and I have been dating for close to a year now. I am on birth control. We almost always use protection when having sex. He has had a couple partners before me, while I have had none. We had unprotected sex maybe 3 months ago, as well as a couple times later in the week 2 weeks ago.

On Tuesday of last week, we ate at Taco Bell, went home, and he gave me oral sex, followed by protected sex. We used a different condom than usual (Durex, I believe, as opposed to Trojan), because we were out and had to use one of my roomate's.

During the afternoon of the next day (Wednesday), I noticed some white/grey discharge, as well as some itching in the general area, which was more noticable when I urinated. I brushed it off as normal, as I sometimes have some itching after a few straight days of sex.

By Thursday morning, the discharge changed to a yellow color with a slight odor, and the itch turned into an itch/soreness. I became a little worried, and told my boyfriend about it. He did some research and we came to the conclusion that it may be Bacterial Vaginosis, as the symptoms of it matched mine, and we learned that it would go away on its own. I put a tampon in to help slow the irritating discharge.

When I removed the tampon Thursday evening, the discharge was a green/yellow color, still with a slight odor, and had completely filled the tampon! My vagina was red on the outside, and it was sore and tender to the touch, along with the ever-so-persistant itch. We now changed our personal prognosis to Trichomoniasis, as it includes the same symptoms as BV, but with a yellow/green discharge. We learned that this would not go away on its own, so we started to worry. I took the tampon out and just used a liner, because my boyfriend told me that he read somewhere not to use a tampon.

However, by Saturday evening, it seems as if everything is clearing up? There is very little (CLEAR, no longer yellow or green) discharge (wouldn't come close to filling a tampon), very little odor, and absolutely no soreness or itching.

As far as I have read, I cannot find any kind of infection that shows up, gradually gets worse and worse, and then begins to clear up, all within a week or so. We think that there may have been something in the Taco Bell that we ate before he gave me oral sex, that somehow infected me. Or possibly I had some sort of reaction to the new condom? Again, it appears to be clearing up... The discharge is clear and is only about the amount of when I am sexually aroused.

Can anyone explain what is going on? Thanks a million!

I have had BV a couple times and this sounds just like it!! if you go to the doc they will most likely give you medication (metrogel is what i was given) to be taken vaginally once or twice a day for 5 days. then you will be free and clear!! good luck!!

if it is bacterial vaginosis (which the symptoms do sound like) then it will NOT go away on its own.... You will need to be seen by a dr and given antibiotics for this to clear up! Worst case scenerio is that these are also symptoms of a couple of std's, I know how hard it can be with NO insurance.... check online in your area for a clinic that will do free std testing for ya! I would definately go and get it checked out......

STD? Or just a general infection?

Don't worry it is not the food. It sounds more like a bacterial infection or a yeast infection. It may not be common for an infection of either type to clear up on it's own, but it can happen. However don't be surprised if it resurfaces. Even if you think it has cleared, it can be lying dorment and could reoccur at any moment.
