caffiene

Good afternoon: I have sleep apnea , i was diagonosed with a AHI of 14.8. I have been on auto cpap treatment for 2 weeks now and my data is good. But i cannot stay on the cpap for a whole night. I just get about 4 to 5 hours a night on it. Very difficult to get used to the mask but i am hanging in there and i am determined. I am trying to get better sleep habits. I was using a lot of caffiene (tea, coffee and chocolate) but the last 2 days have quit using caffiene after noon accept for chocolate milk First question does it take time to get used to having no caffiene in your system because i haven't noticed any difference in my sleep. Second question can you suggest a hot drink i can use that help sleep. I don't like camomillle tea. Thank you

It can take a few weeks to months for your body to get used to not getting anymore caffeine. You must already know that chocolate also has various amounts of caffeine.

It sounds like you need to follow-up with your sleep doctor to further optimize your CPAP usage. I agree, good sleep habits are important, but you may be better served with a formal sleep-hygiene program such as cognitive behavioral therapy. See Dr. Gregg Jacob's insomnia forum for further details for his online program. It can also help with CPAP users.

There are so many recommendations for natural sleep aids, but none work consistently for all people. What's more important is what you do during the day. This is why a formal sleep hygiene program is so important—without this, no sleeping pill, herb, or supplement will help you sleep.
