Quote

Reading Anne Lomott's Grace (Eventually).  She is a wonderful writer. Even at the times I don't agree with her I feel the want to have coffee with her and talk it out, knowing disagreeing would not get in the way of mutual respect.
She had a few gems in this book.  One is:

"I am not a body that happens to have a soul, I am a soul who happens to have a body"

I'd like your thoughts on that.

:-))  Thoughts are plentiful, sunshine.  What will you do with mine:-))))  lol.

Ok...let's go for it>>>

I haven't read Anne Lomott's work, but I like the quote you shared.  It sounds like she believes that the soul is the true part and the body houses it.

That leads me to want to look up "soul" again.  In the Bible, King James Version use the phrase...And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)

Some of the other translations use "living being".

The Hebrew for soul is:

Nephesh (h5315) neh'-fesh; from 5314; prop. a breathing creature, i. e. animal or (abstr.) vitality; used very widely in a lit., accommodated or fig. sense (bodily or mental): - any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, * dead (-ly), desire, * [dis-] contented, * fish, ghost, / greedy, he, heart (-y), (hath, * jeopardy of) life (* in jeopardy), lust, man, me, mind, mortally, one, own, person, pleasure, (her- , him-, my-, thy-) self, them (your) -selves, / slay, soul, / tablet, they, thing, (* she) will, * would have it.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (intellect) of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

I looked up Anne and found this quote (warning: off topic) that I liked:

“You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.”

________________

Ok....that said/done, back to piling some thoughts for you to have.....

Realizing I don't know her to know her frame of reference and am taking the quote at face value...meaning my own interpretation...lol, I am wondering where the spirit is in her view.  Is the body the vehicle that the soul gets around in and able to work through to connect to the world/others?

Leads me to ask what makes this a gem in your view :-)  What grabs you with this quote?

Thank you for sharing,
:-))))

I also thought of Genesis when I read this quote.  The body is dust, although it is dust formed by God and should be respected.  The soul was the gift of himself that  God breathed into us.  So the body goes back to the earth,it's temporary. The soul goes on.

I am looking for the quotes context and when I find it again I will post it.

Any other thoughts?  I'm a sucker for a good discussion.

P.S.
“You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.”  I LOVE this quote, even when it points it finger at me.

The Soul is the essence of you. It is the missing spark in the formula that gives us life.

Interesting but god has no face in my opion nor do i believe it has cursed us nor are we made in its image. But are formed from an idea.

"You will not get to keep your glory nor your riches but what is everlasting is the love others feel for you and the love you have given them." -me

"You are not given a soul you must earn it though your deeds" - i don't remember

"Take from others and you will have it taken from you"-me

"Wisdom cannot be given or learned from someone else but is gain though experanice. When any speaks wisdom they sound like a fool to ever one else"

Interesting quotes.

I think it is fascinating how each of us has our own way of looking at things.  What a world we live in, huh?

It does come down to beliefs and our choosing what we want to follow.  We have values we try live by whether we believe them or are imitating someone we admire.

Can we live without knowing all there is to know about our souls?  Obviously we are....lol! The same goes for our Spirits and bodies.  Some of us know more about taking good care of our bodies than others and eat healthier or exercise, etc.  Then that word...discipline comes into it along with moderation/balance & more "etc.'s".

I want to be honest here and admit that I don't know what my soul or spirit look like.  I believe that the way in which I act and my character reflect who I am.   I can look in the mirror & see my body but cannot see all the cells inside, etc. without some help :-OOOOO

Someone long ago laid a foundation for the myriad of teachings on such subjects.  They were pondering these questions and more long before me.  What "short-cuts" if any are there to understanding the depths?  I feel gratitude for all who have wrestled with understanding how to be more loving and helping others.  Especially considering that if someone hadn't fought for freedom and others joined, we wouldn't be able to hold these discussions.

:-)))
