Help please ??

I had a stroke in Jan of 06 and have went through all the rehab.  Seen the doctors for follow up and continue to go see the doctors to monitor blood pressure.  All the help they tried to give me still not prepare me for the pain that comes with nerve damage.   Also, I am having to deal with the loss of some of my motor skills and balance issues.  However, the main neuro doctor thinks I should go back to work as I am only 33 yrs old.    The aspect of going to work is great in theory but when I set up an interview, the days prior to it are pure hell I physically  get ill (fever, vomiting, muscles spasms).   Is there a way to make the doctors and therapists understand that just because I have exceeded in the physical part of my limits I am still emotionally trying to deal with the issues.  Can someone please tell me how to make things easier.  Thank you for your help Sheila

Thank you for your comment, I have been determined to be disabled but they are wanting to get me off that list.  I am working with a Vocational Rehab counselor and I just can't get it through there head that physically where I can see my limitations I am not yet emotionally as far along.  I have went to my regular doctor for the problems with not being able to sleep and to help deal with the stress of looking for a job.  I find myself very overwhelmed with the limitations that I have to face on a daily bases.   I am a very independant person and to admit I can not do something is very hard.    I will continue to take things slowly and hope that they get better.

You are experiencing what many stroke survivors have gone through -- the emotional adjustments of having suffered a stroke.   These can linger well after the physical signs have gone away.   If it becomes too overwhelming, you need to seek the help of a professional -- a social worker, a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist.   Many stroke survivors may need to go on a short course of antidepressant medications to help them deal with certain changes -- these are not only mental but also chemical changes in their brains - something you have little control over.   Medications IN COMBINATION with therapy may prove to be the best road to recovery.   Unfortunately, you may need to have a formal evaluation by a psychiatrist before you may be deemed disabled to go back to work if you're strong physically -- but talk it over, and see what your options may be.    Never do anything that's uncomfortable for you and treat yourself first.   Ask for help anytime.
