Left Side Thalamic Hemmorhagic Stroke Recovery Progress

Hello,

I know that for every stroke victim it's a case by case scenerio, but I was looking to get some kind of sense of my 48 year old girlfriend's progress in her recovery progress. It has been two weeks since she suffered a left side thalamic hemmorhagic stroke  on 8/17/09 that left her right side paralyzed and her speech jibberishy.

She was in the ICU for thee days, never lost conscious but was sedated for the air tube, breathing fine on her own when they took the tube out three days later, swallowing fine and eating solids 7 days later, stood up with therapist assistance 4 days later. Now 14 days laster she is in a rehab center now moving her hips back and forth and struggling but taking steps. Hamstring and quads on bad right side are strong. Arm is still very flacid, but could move shoulder a couple of times when occupational therapist asked her to. Keeps center of balance relatively well while standing or sitting with not much wobbling. Speech is jibberish alot, but when she focuses she can speak clearly but very slowly in short sentances.

Again I know its case by case in recovery, but does this picture of her recovery two weeks later give anyone somewhat of an idea of what her long-term prognosis could be? Thanks so much.

You need to have your doctor give you a three dimensional map of the stroke and have that mapped to the brain with him/her explaining what functions were affected. The case by case recovery that medical staff use is just because no one has taken the time to research exactly what works to bring back different parts of the brain. Also ask what parts of the brain were in the penumbra of the stroke which is what usually recovers in the 6-12 month timeframe.
For overall stroke recovery read Stronger After Stroke by Peter Levine and you will know more than your medical staff.

Sorry about your girlfriends stroke, I don't know much about thalamic strokes but I read a book that may be of some help.."Teaching me to run" by Tommye-K. Mayer who also wrote "One-Handed in a Two-Handed World" . I believed she also suffered a thalamic stroke.
God Bless You
