Stroke Victim and Bad Breath

Hi,

A friend of mine suffered a very severe stroke last year.

My friend does not like to drink much, but we try to get as much liquid down as possible.

Just the last few days now, the breath has been smelling like bowel movement - my friend goes fairly regularly; as much as 3x a day (soft or loose).

Anyway, my question is this:

What could be causing the breath to be foul in this manner, so far - everyone we've spoken to (doctor included) does not have an answer.

Thanks,

Hi MissMoody,

My stepdad suffered a stroke this past April and he too has a awful odor coming from his mouth.  Is it possible it is one of the medications?  Had you had any luck with a solution?

thank you!

Hi there,

I know that my mother started to have bad breathe after a couple of days while she was lying paralyse in her bed. She wasn't allowed to have any food or water for nearly a week. She was also unable to brush her teeth. Finally, we had someone to get her some oral mouthwash. It was applied with a large sponge tip stick so, the patient doesn't swallow any of it. It is just applied all around their teeth and gums. It doesn't taste good but at least it helps to keep their mouth clean for the lingering food bacteria.

I would also suggest a tongue cleaner or scraper. (click here to see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongue_cleaner). There are various types on the current market which they are easily found in any drug store. This is a little harder to use. I would suggest wearing rubber gloves and using a cotton tissue to hold their tongue in place. While you scrape away any bacteria build up on the tongue. It is not that pleasant but it helps so there's not any bacteria lying around in their mouth. It should prevent any further bad breathe as well as cavities.

Good luck to you there.
