medication and routine chekup

If a massive stroke victim is about 42yrs old and his doctor is not sure what caused the stroke (all test done and all are normal). Does he still need to be on medication and back for routine checkup? How effective would the medication and check up to prevent the 2nd stoke?

Appreicate your help very much.

Understand that the stoke changes people's life overnight and upside down, it is really a challenge mentally, physically and financially to the victim and family. Have tried very hard to pursuade and convince my friend (BP not high, Cholesterol not high, normal from ultrasound scan of the carotid arteries) going back hospital for routine checkup and medication, but fail to do so. So wondering if it is a must.

Hello. My mom just had 2 strokes and they never found a cause. We believe it was due to smoking, stress, and high blood pressure. She does not normally have high blood pressure, but when you get stressed or mad, it can surge. It is also possible a little bit of plaque that was stuck on an artery busted off and clogged an artery to her brain. Smoking constricts blood vessels as well. They also found that my mom had a narrow artery leading to her brain. Check with your nurses and doctors and get as much information as you can. Routine check ups will not prevent another stroke, but getting blood pressure checks and stuff will help. My mom is now going to be on blood thinners because her strokes were caused more than likely by some kind of a clot. Definetly do follow up appointments and try to make lifestyle changes. Quit smoking, exercise, and eat low fat low sodium diets.

Sometimes they never do find the cause, there is a term for it, someone posted it once. Routine checkups will not prevent another stroke unless the dr. has something specific to look for. Is BP high? Cholesterol high? Has an ultrasound been done of the carotid arteries? Looked for a PFO?
