Most tmd pains are muscular origin. Displaced disc is not always the culprit of pain.Current evidences suggest that disc displacement or anchored disc phenomeneon is probably the result of overloading by masticatory musculature. It is said that we clinician treat patient's pain, instead of structural defect of imaging studies.Disc and associated joint pathology can be managed by manipulation , arthrocentesis,or pharmacologic intervention. The treatment option depends on the diagnosis. However, occlusal appliance ( tmj orthosis, splint, night guard) yields long term results in my personal experience.Sometimes, you may need to see a chiropractor or osteopathy practitioner to resore whole body structure . Podiatrist may be involved to correct faulty lower exttemeties biomechanics.Seeing a competent tmj specialist is advised.
Hi- I also have minor TMJ cause by an injury. I have worked for orthodontic company for about a year and from what I have learned at this job braces would help with this problems. I can't give you much techinal information but I do get the Orthodontic Journals and talk to our Sales Reps who all say that can help and be an alternative to surgery.
I was afraid that I wouldn't get any responses!
