Lock jaw after oral surgery

My fiancee had oral surgery to remove a wisdom tooth which had its root wrapped around a nerve. Well it's been 5 days since his surgery and he can't open his mouth up to even eat, and not to mention his face is swollen bad. He woke up in the middle of the procedure, so they had to continue without giving him anything for the pain. We were wondering if it is normal for someone not to be able to open up there mouth after this procedure.

Post -op trismus associated with  mandibular third molar extraction is common. However, the trismus generally lasts 3-5 days. Going back to your surgeon to have a follow-up exam is advised.
