4.87 TSH should I take Synthroid 25mg?

Hello Dr.

Iam a 28 year old rheumatoid arthritis patient taking Enbrel. This week my doctor recommended doing a TSH to know how my thyroid was functioning. The results were 4.87  He told me I needed to take Synthroid 25mg dosage because I had hypothyroidism. I was having very dry mouth, eyes & skin, tiredness, mood changes, loss of hair etc. Should i keep taking this dosage? I just started it, two days ago.
Thank you very much for any help and God bless!

Margarita

Hi,

Dr. Lupo doesn't usually reply twice on the same post

You need to have retest of TSH, FT3 and FT4 in approximately 6 weeks.

Target TSH 1 - 2.  Target FT3/FT4 middle to upper half of the reference range.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Doctor for your diagnose. I started taking Synthroid 25mg 2 days ago. After taking this med, how much time should I wait to take another blood test?
What type of analysis you recommend me taking?????

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
It is not uncommon to see autoimmune thyroid disease in patients w/ RA.  In this case, it's likely Hashimoto's with early/mild hypothyroidism.  This does not absolutely require treatment, but with symptoms it is worth a try to see if bring the TSH back to completely normal helps.
