Hyperparathyroidism

Dear Dr. Lupo

I wonder if I might have hyperparathyroidism.

I have a lot of symptoms over the last 6 months including muscle weakness, bone pain, joint pain, muscle twitching, fatigue, problems with balance and coordination to name just a few.right now at the moment the bone pain has become more and more attention. It´s so bad that my foot bones hurt even when I just normally walk around.

I know that might not sound like classical HPT,but in addition to the symptoms my calcium levels are always high to elevated during the last months. They range between 10,5 and 11 always bouncing up and down.I have also already checked my PTH level which is 53 which is not out of range but high normal.

I have already excluded other possible causes for my high calcium including cancer, sarcoidosis, vitamin d deficiency through extensive testing. So based on logic Hyperparathyroidism is the only thing that seems to make sense.

considering what I write you, does that sound like hyperparathyroidism?

thx a lot

patrick

You have primary hyperparathyroidism based on Calcium of 10.5-11 with inappropriately normal PTH.

I had calcium like yours for years and years.  By the time I finally got treatment, I had osteoporosis.  I suffered terribly from pain.  The disease took many years of my life.  Your endo should have a chart on which calcium and PTH are plotted.  Depending on where the two values meet can give a clue about HPT.

I am also hypothyroid.  My TPO was about 685.  I don't think the two are related.

thx for that answer.

what really concerns me is that I seem to have an autoimmune thyroid issue, too.

In May my TSH was about 3 which is relatively high. Now it is 1,35 which seems ok.but what concerns me is that my TPO is 60 and I know thats to high.Does that mean that I definatley must have hasimoto´s or some other thyroid autoimmune issue,or could there be other causes for the high TPO??

THX
