milky nipple discharge

About a month and a half ago I started experiencing a clear/milky discharge bilaterally and from multiple ducts.  I have also been having drastically lighter menstrual flow for about 4 cycles so I had guessed that maybe I was pregnant.  Based on that assumption I did not seek medical attention until about 2 weeks ago as I was in the U.S.  I visited my doctor and blood tests have been done, but she has been incredibly vague on what it could be.  The results from my first round of blood tests showed that I am not pregnant, i have normal levels of prolactin, and my thyroid is slightly slowed but not to the point where she believes i need to be on medication.

What could be the cause of my symptoms?  I am very concerned, please help.

I also stopped taking my birth control pills at the end of January.  Could they have been masking (treating?) some underlying condition?

Would consider rechecking the prolactin with a 1:100 dilution to make sure it was a valid result -- the labs usually do this automatically, but not always.
Otherwise, it may just be a normal phase.  Would keep seeing a GYN or breast specialist to sort out other causes.
