7 weeks pregnant and 6.5 TSH

Hi There,

I just had my blood test results and it seems that I have 6.5 TSH.  I am 7 weeks pregnant and my doctor has prescribed to me Synthroid 0.025 and I was wondering if that is sufficient.  I am worrying that I started to take these meds too late and it will effect the development of the baby.  I have not done the test prior to pregnancy but my doctor thinks that I most likely have it because I am pregnant but no one really knows.  Can you please let me know if my baby will be ok or should I ask my doctor to increase my meds.
Thanks!!

Hi,

you need to be tested every 4 weeks for the rest of th pregnancy.  It is usual for thyroid hormone requirements to progressively increase during pregnany.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
This TSH elevation is minor (ie, low risk of probelms) but should be treated - would start the medication and keep the TSH in the 0.3-2.0 range....which may require more than 0.025mg of synthroid.  We would usually start with 0.05-0.075mg in these cases but talk with your doctor.
