why do i need another thyroid test when the first test came back low?

I went to the doctor because i was not feeling well. I told my doctor i thought it might be my thyroid because it runs in my family so he did the test and it came back low but the doctor said its not that low so i need to wait another six weeks to take another test. I really feel bad now why do i have to wait? I just want to know is this normal?

For borderline levels, repeating the lab in 6 weeks is standard to make certain we don't commit patients to what is often life-long medication for a temporary abnormality of thyroid labs.  However, with the symptoms and family history, it may be worth considering a trial of medication sooner.  Would test TPO antibodies for Hashimoto's - if these are positive and a repeat TSH within 2 weeks of the first is still borderline, then we usually offer a trial of treatment in this setting.
