underactive thyroid but LOSING weight??

I have been diagnosed as having underactive thyroid which usually ends up with gaining weight but im losing weight is this normal or is there another underlying problem? firstly i was put on 25mg thyroxine after having my bloods checked  a few months later my dose was increased to 50mg as it hadnt got n e better. Also the side affects to thyroxine is weight loss. I cant afford to lose n e more weight. Can thyroid problems/medication affect your monthly cycle as my last period only lasted a day and a half which is very unusual for me.

You can get a 24 hour saliva test from www.canaryclub.org which will give you a more accurate overview of your adrenal function

Were you losing weight/underweight before starting the Thyroxine? You could have an underlying adrenal problem that's causing the weight loss. Every thyroid med in the product insert and prescribing instructions tell the doctor to test adrenal function before prescribing the thyroid med. BUT THEY DON'T DO IT! And low adrenal function is much more common than doctors will admit.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
ask your doctor to check adrenal gland function (best done with ACTH stimulation test).

However - some hyperthyroid patients gain weight and some hypos lose weight.

Thyroid dysfunction can cause menstrual problems - often takes 2-3 months after normalizing thyroid labs to see stabilization of menses.
