Hypo/Hyper

I was diagnosis with hypothyroid in 2005 put on 25mcg synthroid  then in 2006 checked my levels and they were normal.  So the doctor told me that I could stop taking my meds. Then in 2007 I started having symptoms of hyper they checked my levels and said I was hypo so the doctor put me on 50mcg then 75mcg. In 2009 they told me that I was hyper and that they thought I had hasmoto's  Well now my thyroid is that my T3 is bordline for hyper and the T4 is bordline for hypo. My TSH level is also abnormal as in they said the level is high. Even when I am hypo I have symptoms of hyper. The only right symptom is weight gain for when I am hypo. My thyroid had been hypo to hyper at different time. So my question for you is that what could cause my thyroid to bounce back and forth and when I am either hyper or hypo I have syptoms for the one I am not?

Thank you for your response to my question. I have a doctors appointment on the 9th to get the levels checked. My doctor told me that as long as the T3 and T4 is okay then the TSH does not matter. What do they know.

Most commonly, it is simply a need to fine tune the medication and there is not a true "swing" to hyper from hypo (independent of meds).  The T4 and T3 levels may be influenced by other meds (esp estrogen) so the TSH is usually the best one to follow in most cases.  If high, we increase the dose to normalize.  Some patients do better with higher TSH levels -- that needs to be fine-tuned w/ your doctor.  Hashimoto's is likely as it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism.
