Second Opinion

Hi Dr.
I have just had my TSH checked by my PA. She said that it was normal. When I asked her what the number was she said 3.2 or 3.02 ( not sure which). I asked her what range she was using and she said .5 to 5. I know that the range has been changed to .3 to 3. I have gained 30 lbs in the last three years and I am tired a lot. I do not sleep at night and I have sore muscles. I also have trouble getting enough air at times. I have melasma. Up until three years ago I was able to work out five days a week and lift weights. My PA said I am depressed and gave me effexor and ativan. My question is, is my THS high enough to warrent a second opinion? I really do not want to start taking a bunch of anti depressants if I do not need them. I get up and go to work every day and I play softball and I play golf. I am usually a pretty happy person. Aside from being achy and tired I am very healthy. I have called in sick to work only once in the last year. Please tell me if I should get a different Dr. or just take the drugs and shut up?

This is not likely to cause symptoms, but some patients benefit from thyroid hormone with these borderline TSH levels.  Would usually check thyroid antibodies and repeat TSH in 6 weeks and re-evaluate at that point.  There is not compelling evidence that treating a TSH at this range is necessary for most patients, but again, the occassional patient does feel better.
