calcium in blood too high

Dear Dr. Lupo,
I have had problems for 6 mos., in hospital twice, for kidney and bladder infections, and continuously have one. I am on antibiotics now. A cysto exam Monday showed I have many blisters in the bladder. My test results on blood and urine show that my calcium level is too high, double the normal, which my doctor says indicates a parathyroid gland problem. I produce kidney stones and have passed many for years and had lithotripsy 3 times. I have an appointment with a general surgeon the 20th to check this out. What problems am I looking at, and what questions should I ask?
I am sick, weak, get very little sleep, have heart palpitations. I am 65, married, have other problems such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, migraines. I look forward to feeling better if possible. Thank you very much! In Jan. when I entered
the ER I was almost septic. I am better, but would like information if possible.

Check blood for PTH and calcium at the same time -- if both high it is an easy diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism and given this history surgery would be indicated.  parathyroid.com has a lot of information on this topic.

I will leave it to Dr. Lupo to answer your questions on calcium.

Have you seen an endocrinologist about this? Have you had your vitamin d level checked? Are you on medications for your other conditions?

Arthritis, fibromyalgia and migraines are symptoms that are quite common in people who have Sjogren's Syndrome. which is an inflammatory disorder, in the rheumatology family. feeling ill, week and sleep problems are also part of it. Most doctors know very little about it and therefore don't check for it.
