What's wrong with me?

Dr. Lupo:

My TSH, 3rd generation was 0.10.  My Cardio CRP was 35.  I have a fever (101degrees Fahrenheit) for 3 weeks and it can be abated with ibuprofen.  The left hand side of my neck is very sensitive to touch and swallow.  I have loss of appetite.  When I am feverish, I feel rather week and achy.  My doctor has given me prescription of further blood test (T4 & T5, I think), chest x-ray and ultrasound of my neck.  The fever comes on the afternoon like clock work.  I am very concerned.

Please help me.

Thanks,
Ann

Based on this, most likely you have subacute thyroiditis -- it should get better in the next several weeks -- there is no specific treatment besides ibuprofen (or sometimes steroids), beta-blockers (if high heart rate).  It usually completely resolves, but may go through a hypothyroid phase in the process.

Thanks so much.  My doctor called to say that all but my thyroid test returned negative and suggested that I see an endocrinologist and she would faxed all the test to him/her.  Like you she suspected that I have throiditis and she also advised taking ibuprofen on a regular basis to mitigate the pain in my neck.  Also, she had given me a z-pack of antibiotic which I have taken for 4 days and it has not done any thing for me.

Thank you.
