thyroid and digestion

I have been having problems with my stomach - bloating, stomach noises, butterflies, burping and slight pain. My doc has tested my blood for most things and i am going for an ultra sound scan soon. however, i wanted you opinion on whether my thyroid could be hyper active. i have a fast, pounding heart rate, light painful irregular periods and the problem runs in my family. can hyperthyroidism cause stomach problems? Should i mention my concerns to my doc and she has not suggested thyroid issues?

The symptoms are not specific for thyroid, but could be thyroid -- ask your doctor to see if thyroid has been tested and discuss the results with her.

Thanks Dr Lupo! Thanks Cutiepants97!! i am going to be brave and mention it to my doctor! Did you have any other symptoms before you were diagnosed?? i do feel quite anxious even when i'm not anxious for anything!! my gastro doc told me it was IBS but i am starting to think he was wrong! he did no tests (i live in the UK and the health system isn't great) To be honest i felt like he was just trying to get me out of the door as quickly as possible! Thank you so much. Sar

Hi,  those are all symptoms of hyperthyroidism.  Before I was diagnosed I was going to the bathroom 3-4 times a day. I lost a lot a weight.  They were usually runny and had a awful smell. Sorry I am so graphic.  Thyroid problems can also cause anxiety even when you are not stressed which can also cause stomach problems.  I had such a bad time with the anxiety, (waves of panic )that it turned into Gastritis.  Once I was diagnosed and put on the right medicine things started to calm down including the rapid heart beating.  My suggestion would be to have a full blood panel (CBC) which icludes the basic thyroid panel if everything comes back normal I would go to a Gastro. to see if there is something going on in your gut.  Good luck and be proactive you are going to be OK. Sheri
