Hydrocephalus

Three weeks ago, my cousin, who is 12 years old, had a brain hemorrhage. Now, the bleeding had stopped but he had water in his brain - hydrocephalus condition. According to the doctor, a minor surgery is needed to connect a tube from his brain to his abdomen to drain out the water. It is told  that this will be permanent. We will like to ask for a second opinion and want to know whether if this surgery is the only way? Will there be any side effects after the surgery? Thanks.

Hi...the surgery u r referring to isto installation shunt to divert the excess CSF...sometimes the body stops over producing the fluid and the shunt is left in place as it is more of an issue to remove it.

There r NS's that specialize in this issue....ICP can be due to trauma as well as other congenital conditions...and some develop it post op for various brain surgery.....shunts r not uncommon.....find a dr u all r comfortable with.

   Good luck
