some info please

My father was hit in the left side of the head about 1 cm behind his temple when I was little which put him into a coma for 4 days(or may have been induced) a few years later he had head scans which showed brain cells had been killed which if I remember correctly controlled relaxation & mood swings. I'm after the terminology for this so I can look it up as I find it hard to explain. My parents died a few years ago so I can't ask them about it.
any help would be greatly appreciated
Mia

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Damage to the brain cells resulting in softening of the brain matter is called encephalomalacia. Encephalomalacia is not an illness. It is basically a softening of the brain matter as a result of an ischemia or infarction, degenerative changes, infection, craniocerebral trauma, or other injury.  Depending on the site of brain cell death it can cause mood problems, memory loss, etc. Take care!
