AFTER SIX WEEKS IN COMA, MANY MONTHS IN HOSPITAL WITH MASSIVE BRAIN HEMORRHAGE, I HAVE LEARNED THAT PHYSOCAL, SPEACH AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY WORKS WONDERS. THE TYPE OF DOCTOR YOU NEED TO CONSULT IS CALLED A PHYSISTRIST. tHEY ARE DOCTORS WHO SPECIALIZE IN PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION AND DEAL FREQUENTLY WITH BRAIN INJURY PATIENTS. THEY WORK WITH PHYSICAL, SPEECH AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS IN REHAB FOR THE PATIENT. aSK YOUR DAUGHTERS PRIMARY CAR DOCTOR TO PLEASE REFER YOU TO ONE OF THESE DOCTORS. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR DEAR CHILD, KEEP PRAYING AND GET THE BEST HELP YOU CAN FIND, AND NEVER BE SATISFIED WITH A DOCTOR WHO SAY'S "THEY HAVE GONE AS FAR AS THEY CAN, EGT SECOND THIRD AND FOURTH OPINIONS, AND LOOK FOR SUPPORT SYSTEMS, EVERY STATE HAS BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATIONS, SEEK THEM ONLINE, THEY HAVE SOCIAL WORKERS WHO CAN HELP YOU FIND THE HELP YOU NEED AND THEY DO NOT CHARGE, JUST GO TO GOOGLE AND TYPE IN BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF---=-AND THEN ENTER THE NAME OF YOUR STATE. AND IF YOU WISH PLEASE RESPOND TO NE AT MY POST, FISCHBEIN.
My son was in a Coma for weeks. I talked to him, held his hand, watched TV with him, so I kind of know a bit of what you are feeling. In my mind I searched for him, trying to pull his life force back, I told him to rest, he was safe and I was there to watch over him as were his sisters and the other people that Loved him. Many bad things happened, terror ruled, then one beautiful afternoon he woke. That was 18 months ago. Now it is one day at a time and we will get there. Don't give up, I know that it hurts to sit with your child as you are doing. You and she will be in my prayers.
You have my heartfelt sympathies.
I would not necessarily assume that her lack of responsiveness signifies no brain function. When my mother was dying they performed a brain wave test and told me she was "vbrain dead". Thirty minutes later she was communicating me with ":yes" or "no" answers by squeezing my hand with both fingers.
I would not giove up hope. The life-force is very magical and unpredictable.
The important thing is to provide her with as much love, human contact and stimulation as possible. Visit and be with her as often as possible. Hold her hand or place your hand on her shoulder when you visit. Maintain hand contact with one of her body surfaces whenever you are there.
See that she is taken outside as frequently as possible. Goldfish in a tank next to her bed provide easy-to-care companions. Bring babies and kittens for her to hold. Make sure you bring her small quantities of different flavored foods and drinks. Different flavors of ice-cream and yogurt. Give her light, gentle shoulder massages. Run your fiongers lightly up her arms, both right and left. Talk to her and read to her. Do not assume she cannot hear and understand.
Ensure that she watches television frequently and does not develop bedsores.
Don't give up hope.
She will be in my prayers.
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. Usually brain damage occurs if oxygen supply is cut off for 4-6 minutes and in some cases it happen even after 3 minutes. In her case it may have been much longer and brain cells would have got damaged. You can now again consult a neuro-psychiatrist who can assess both her mental and neurological function and assess whether rehab will help her or not. I am sorry but this is not something I can say with surety on net, without complete case history and examining her. Take care!
